7-day, 6-night cruise to Koh Tao in Thailand
PRESENTATION
Koh Tao, a small island that once hosted many sea turtles in its very clear waters, hence its name, Tao means turtle.
With an area of only 21 square km and located about 70 kilometers from the coast between Suratthani and Chumphon, a small impression of the end of the world... A
small tropical paradise, but also that of lovers of scuba diving or snorkeling , because close to more than twenty dive sites, among the best in the archipelago.
HOW TO GET THERE ou can easily get there in 2.5 hours by boat from Chumphon and 3 hours from Samui, with a half-hour stop at Koh Pha-Ngan, by normal boat. Faster connections are provided by speed-boats, about 1 hour less.
Samui's diving schools also go there to take divers there.
STORY
From 1933, the island was used as a prison for political detainees, and in 1947 the Prime Minister at the time, Khun A-Paiwong, pleaded for the royal pardon of all prisoners, accepted the island was deserted...
But the same year, Khun Ueam from the neighboring island of Koh Pha-Ngan and his brother, trying their fishing boat reached the island of the turtle, after a long day of boating in this period, they decided to take their families to live there. They grew the fruits and vegetables that were used in their cooking there and the first generation of inhabitants of Koh Tao was born!
KOH NANG YUAN
Very small island a few hundred meters from Koh Tao, and which has the particularity of being connected by two sandbanks to two other islands.
Interesting dive sites around and possibility to rent bungalows on the islet.
You can get there by renting a "long tail" (typical Thai fishing boat) for around 100 baht for 1 to 2 people.
Recently, there is an "entrance tax" on Koh Nang Yuan, 100 baht for an adult and 50 for a child.
ACCOMMODATION IN KOH TAO
Koh Tao has a wide variety of bungalows, from simple huts at 150 baht a night, public toilets and usually no electricity to bungalows with a fan and indoor shower/toilet for 400 baht.
If you want air conditioning, count about double that.
Prices vary according to the seasons, as everywhere in Thailand, the peak periods are from December to March and in July-August.
GETTING AROUND THE ISLAND
There are still the traditional taxi-boats that connect the different beaches to each other, a nice way.
DIVING
Koh Tao has many diving schools, perhaps the highest density in Thailand.
It was only about ten years ago that the first divers from Koh Samui discovered the magnificent seabed, home to a wide variety of fish. The island quickly became a famous stopover in Southeast Asia.
So the atmosphere on the island is very "diving", we exchange our impressions with a Dane, we discuss with an Englishman his previous experiences, in short, lots of nice encounters in perspective for enthusiasts of this water sport.
You can take PADI courses from beginner to professional and also rent equipment without any problem.
MV banzai
The Mothership! This 26 meter wooden beam boat has been cruising on the seas of Thailand for over 20 years and Captain Piak, our friendly neighbourhood Pirate, has been steering her almost as long. She is the largest dive boat in Koh Tao & definitely the sexiest too! Perfect as a dive vessel, she cruises with a maximum of 40 divers including staff.
She has a top deck for sun worshippers, an undercover deck for dive briefings and lunches, a small inside saloon and on the dive deck enough space for more than 50 divers. Everyone loves diving off The Banzai.
MV Navakid
24 meters long, and the second largest boat we have
in our fleet. Navakid can be a nifty little motor
when she wants & due to this boat being a little quicker than our Mothership we use this more for our fun divers as we can get to cruise the island dive sites which are further away a little faster than on other boats.
This boat also has a sundeck and a sheltered area with tables and seating on the top deck which makes it very easy to create a welcoming & friendly atmosphere. This is a very sociable boat and a popular one with all our guests.
MV Big Blue
Our original boat, and the boss’s favourite. This is far more of a personal boat and generally used for our courses that are doing shallow water training. It’s a great 16 meter long training boat as it is so easy to get in and out of the water and very roomy so there is lots of space in which to kit up. Great character and an ideal boat for smaller courses or groups.
